Someone Had to Say It — A Song Inspired by Luke Kornet's Open Letter

Mar 11, 2026

📖 The Story

The Story: On March 2, 2026, San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet did something rare in professional sports—he published an open letter on Medium directly challenging another NBA team's business decision.

The Atlanta Hawks had announced "Magic City Monday," a promotional night celebrating what they called "the city's iconic cultural institution." What they didn't mention in their press release was that Magic City is Atlanta's most famous strip club.

Kornet, a 30-year-old journeyman who has played for the Knicks, Bulls, Celtics, and now Spurs, called out the hypocrisy: "The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world."

He didn't mince words about his concerns: "Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected."

The response was swift. Within a week, the NBA itself stepped in and canceled the promotion. One voice—when everyone else stayed silent—created an unstoppable chain reaction.

This punk rock anthem captures that moment of defiance: the shaking hands writing the letter, the fear of backlash, but ultimately the conviction that silence is complicity. When the room is full of people looking at the floor, someone has to say it.

📝 Lyrics

Room full of people looking at the floor
Everybody sees it but nobody says a word
They told me keep it quiet, told me play along
But silence is a sentence and I can't be that wrong

Something's gotta give
Can't just let it live

Someone had to say it
Someone had to stand
Someone had to risk it all
When no one raised a hand
Someone had to say it
And I'm still standing here
Won't apologize for speaking up
When no one wants to hear

Now they're pointing fingers, calling me the one
Who broke the silent contract that kept everyone numb
But I'd rather be the outcast with a spine intact
Than sell my voice for comfort and never get it back

Something's gotta give
Can't just let it live

Someone had to say it
Someone had to stand
Someone had to risk it all
When no one raised a hand
Someone had to say it
And I'm still standing here
Won't apologize for speaking up
When no one wants to hear

My hands were shaking when I wrote it down
My voice was breaking but I wouldn't back down
They said I'd lose everything I've known
But I'd rather stand alone than turn to stone

Someone had to say it!
Someone finally stood!
Someone had to break the silence!
And I knew damn well I could!
Someone had to say it!
We're all standing here!
Won't apologize for speaking up!
The whole world's gonna hear!

Had to say it!
Had to say it!
SOMEONE HAD TO SAY IT!
