Still Building

📖 The Story

The Story: On February 24, 2026 — a date chosen to honor both Kobe's jersey number 24 and Gianna's number 2 — Vanessa Bryant unveiled the "Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Court" at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California.

It's been six years since the helicopter crash in Calabasas that took Kobe, Gianna, and seven others. In that time, Vanessa has channeled unimaginable grief into tangible monuments: the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, the Mamba Academy expansion, and now this — a children's basketball court inside a hospital where sick kids and their families can find moments of play and normalcy.

The court features the iconic purple and gold, Gianna's jersey number on one baseline, Kobe's on the other. "Building," Vanessa said during the unveiling. "That's what we do. That's what he did. That's what we'll keep doing."

The numbers 2 and 24 have become sacred in the Bryant family lexicon — appearing on tributes, buildings, and now calendars. February 24th (2/24) combines both forever.

When we saw this story, we found something universal: the way love refuses to stop when someone dies. It keeps working. It keeps building. The hands that used to hold theirs now lay bricks in their name. Grief becomes action. Loss becomes legacy.

We wrote it as heartland rock with gospel swells because the emotion demanded that Springsteen-meets-Sunday-morning energy. The hook — "I'm still building / What you started, I'll see it through" — captures the defiant continuation of love. The bridge line "Grief becomes a kind of kindling / When you burn it into prayer" might be the truest thing we've written.

Heartland Rock with Soul Inflections

Piano foundation building to gospel swells. String stabs for emotional punctuation. Stacked harmonies that sound like a community singing together. Arena rock polish with blue-collar grit. Sparse-to-full dynamics that mirror the journey from grief to purpose.

📝 Lyrics

Every morning pours the coffee Stares out where your chair used to be Hands in concrete, heart won't quit it Love don't stop when someone goes free So I carry what you carried Before the whole thing falls Building what you'll never see I'm still answering your call I'm still building What you started, I'll see it through I'm still building Every wall I raise is you Kids are asking why I'm crying Over blueprints on the floor They don't know the half of what you Laid the foundation for So I carry what you carried Before the whole thing falls Building what you'll never see I'm still answering your call I'm still building What you started, I'll see it through I'm still building Every wall I raise is you Grief becomes a kind of kindling When you burn it into prayer You left the hammer in my hand, love I'll swing it anywhere I'm still building What you started, I'll see it through I'm still building Every wall I raise is you Still building... What you started, I'll see it through
