The Costume Fits

📖 The Story

The Story: In April 2025, British actor Paapa Essiedu was officially announced as Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series — a role originated by the late Alan Rickman across eight films. Essiedu, who is Black, immediately became the target of a sustained campaign of racist death threats and online abuse.

In a profile published by The Hollywood Reporter this week, Essiedu spoke candidly about the threats. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he told The Sunday Times of London. “The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ Nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job. I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”

But Essiedu — known for acclaimed roles in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror — refused to be intimidated. “The abuse fuels me,” he said. “It makes me more passionate about making this character my own, because I think of how I felt as a kid. I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That’s motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they’d rather I died instead of doing work I’m going to be really proud of.” He has signed on for ten years. “I’ll be 45 by the time I finish,” he said. The commitment is absolute.

The series, currently filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, alongside John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. It’s set to launch on HBO Max in 2027, with plans to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels into a separate season.

When we saw this story, we found something that goes far beyond a casting controversy. This is about what it feels like to walk into a room where everyone has already decided you don’t belong — and staying anyway. Not out of defiance for its own sake, but because a kid somewhere needs to see it. The song never names anyone. “The costume fits” is a double meaning: the role fits the actor, and the armor he’s had to build from the hatred fits too.

We wrote it as industrial rock — NIN meets Rage Against the Machine — because the genre IS controlled fury. The mechanical pulse of the breakdown (“Read the threats, delete, repeat”) captures the daily ritual of processing hatred. The whisper-to-scream dynamics mirror Essiedu’s own emotional arc: the quiet vulnerability of “I’d be lying if I said the words don’t stick” building to the explosive defiance of “You lit the fire but I’m the blaze.”

The Chalk Outline Being expected to fill a dead version of someone else — a body double for a ghost.
Potion Master The deadliest ingredients make the strongest glow — brewing strength from poison.
The Costume The role fits the person, not the other way around — the character was always underneath this skin.
Ink and Page They write the hatred, but it’s on his canvas. Your hate’s the ink but I’m the page.

🎸 The Sound

Industrial Rock — NIN Meets RATM

Whisper-to-scream dynamics, mechanical pulse, staccato verses building to explosive chorus. The sound of controlled fury — not blind rage, but the precise, deliberate power of someone who refuses to be moved. Processed vocal layers over palm-muted chugging, synth bass undertow, cavernous reverb, and sudden drops to silence.

📝 Lyrics

They drew the face before I walked the room
A chalk outline of someone else’s tomb
Every mirror showing what they want to see
A body double standing where I’m meant to be

You wrote the script, you cast the ghost
But I’m the one who wants it most

The costume fits, the costume fits
No matter what you scream, the costume fits
I’ll wear this skin, I’ll take the stage
Your hate’s the ink but I’m the page
The costume fits

The poison drips but potion makers know
The deadliest ingredients make the strongest glow
You handed me your hatred like a gift
Now watch me wear it like it always fit

The costume fits, the costume fits
No matter what you scream, the costume fits
I’ll wear this skin, I’ll take the stage
Your hate’s the ink but I’m the page
The costume fits

Read the threats, delete, repeat
Read the threats, delete, repeat

I’d be lying if I said the words don’t stick
Every scar a rehearsal, every wound a gift
Here’s the part that you could never understand
The character was always underneath this skin

The costume fits, THE COSTUME FITS
Your fury’s just my spotlight, and the costume fits
I’ll wear this skin, I’ll own this stage
You lit the fire but I’m the blaze
THE COSTUME FITS

The costume fits… it always did
