The Train Went Through Fire — A Song Inspired by Canada wildfires leave a train encased in flames while smoke drifts toward the U.S.; crew rescued after close call

Jul 16, 2026

📖 The Story

The Story: On July 15, 2026, video from near Armstrong, Ontario showed a Canadian National Railway crew caught inside a freight train as wildfire flames closed in around the tracks. NBC/KYMA reported that the cab was lit orange-red by flames and that a crew member radioed, "We're encased in flames now." CN later confirmed the crew was safely evacuated.

Fox Weather reported that three CN trains had been stopped in the area because of fire conditions, with Ontario Provincial Police saying the trains included combustible and flammable materials. The footage caught the terrible mismatch between heavy machinery and a wind-fed wall of fire: steel rails, glass windows, radio discipline, and no easy road out.

The close call was part of a much larger Ontario emergency. The Guardian reported more than 100 active wildfires in northern Ontario, Environment Canada health warnings, mandatory evacuations from First Nations communities, and smoke that turned Toronto's sky yellow while spreading toward parts of the northeastern United States. The train video became a single human-sized window into a regional crisis.

What stayed with us was not just the spectacle of the flames, but the sound of people continuing to do their jobs while fear pressed against the glass. A locomotive is supposed to mean control: rails, signals, weight, schedule. In this story, that control shrank to a voice on a radio, a hand near the throttle, and the hope that everyone would get through together.

We wrote the song as metallic grunge and groove metal because the story needed heat, weight, and forward motion. The half-time stomp mirrors a train refusing to disappear inside the smoke; the repeated hook turns the rail line into an oath. Under the headline, the song is about workaday courage: ordinary people carrying one another through an impossible passage.

📝 Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Smoke wrote black names on the morning glass
Steel wheels prayed where the pine line flashed
The radio cracked like a match in a jar
There was no way back, only forward through sparks

[Pre-Chorus]
And the whole world narrowed to a strip of rail
Breath in the shirt, ash under the nails

[Chorus]
The train went through fire
With the sky coming down
Iron in the lungs
And cinders for a crown
Keep your hand on the throttle
Keep your eyes on the wire
When the night blocks the road
The train goes through fire

[Verse 2]
Toronto wore sunset at the wrong time of day
Every far-off flame found a throat in the haze
But out past the timber where the warning bells screamed
Two shadows held on to a railroad dream

[Pre-Chorus]
Not heroes carved clean, just souls who stayed
While the red wall opened and the timber gave way

[Chorus]
The train went through fire
With the sky coming down
Iron in the lungs
And cinders for a crown
Keep your hand on the throttle
Keep your eyes on the wire
When the night blocks the road
The train goes through fire

[Bridge]
Some storms don't ask who deserves the ground
Some doors are smoke and still have to be found
If the world is a furnace and the map is a lie
You carry one another to the other side

[Guitar Solo]

[Final Chorus]
The train went through fire
With the sky coming down
Iron in the lungs
And cinders for a crown
Keep your hand on the throttle
Keep your eyes on the wire
When the night blocks the road
The train goes through fire
The train goes through fire
