This Descent — A Song Inspired by Mikaela Shiffrin's 6th Crystal Globe

This Descent

📖 The Story

The Story: On March 25, 2026, Mikaela Shiffrin clinched her record-tying sixth World Cup overall title — the Crystal Globe, the biggest annual prize in ski racing — after finishing 11th in the final giant slalom of the season in Hafjell, Norway. She finished 87 points ahead of Germany's Emma Aicher in the closest overall race since 2015. And then she broke down in tears.

"It's quite emotional," Shiffrin said, visibly shaking. "This thing sums a whole season of work and fighting with the whole team." But the tears weren't just about this season. On November 30, 2024, Shiffrin crashed in a giant slalom that punctured her oblique muscles and nearly pierced her organs. As she worked her way back — from walking normally to training GS again months later — she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in February 2025. She called the mental obstacles harder than the physical ones.

That she clinched the globe in giant slalom — once her weakest discipline, and the event where the crash happened — made it devastating in the best possible way. She returned to GS racing for only the last three races of the 2024-25 season, with a best finish of 25th. This season, she finished between third and sixth in eight of ten GS races. According to Powder Magazine, clips of her reaction showed just how much it still meant — the winningest alpine skier of all time, with 110 World Cup victories, crying like it was her first. She also led the U.S. women's team to its first Nations Cup title since 1982.

Her father Jeff Shiffrin died unexpectedly in February 2020. She's spoken about feeling his presence on the mountain. Six titles, and six times standing where he can't join her. The Park Record reported that Shiffrin's journey back has been the defining story of the last two World Cup seasons — not the wins, but the willingness to keep showing up after the mountain nearly ended her career.

When we saw this story, we found something bigger than a sports record. This is about what happens when the tears at the top aren't joy — they're release. Years of carrying fractures and grief and doubt, and finally letting the pressure bend. The song isn't about climbing. It's about descent — because skiing IS descent, and the power comes from reframing achievement as letting go rather than conquering.

We wrote it as an alternative rock power ballad because the sound needed to build like that second GS run — starting with intimate vulnerability, the weight of everything she carried, and exploding into the moment when the mountain finally gave back what it took. "I was made for this descent / Every scar is evidence" isn't a victory cry. It's a survivor's whisper turned to a roar.

Mountain that keeps getting steeper Every win raises the bar — the summit doesn't get closer, it demands more
Crystal forming under pressure Beauty from being crushed — the globe itself as evidence of what pressure creates
The last run Everything riding on one descent — the moment between gravity and grace
Gravity as both enemy and instrument The same force that breaks you is the one you harness to fly

📝 Lyrics

They put me back together crooked
Stitched the fractures with a prayer
Every doctor said the same thing
Careful now, you've done your share
But careful never crossed the finish
Careful never shook the earth
I was born inside a blizzard
And I learned what cold is worth

Count the years, count the bones
I paid for every inch alone

I was made for this descent
Every scar is evidence
Tears don't mean I'm breaking
They mean the pressure finally bent
I was made for this descent

My father's voice inside the static
Of a morning I can't place
Six times I stood where no one reaches
Six times with his empty space
They called it record, called it history
I just called it one more run
Every gate I carved through cleanly
Was a conversation with the sun

I was made for this descent
Every scar is evidence
Tears don't mean I'm breaking
They mean the pressure finally bent
I was made for this descent

At the bottom when it's quiet
And the whole world holds its breath
I don't hear the crowd behind me
I hear everyone I've left
The funeral I ran from in the snow
The mountain whispering come back

I was made for this descent
Every scar is evidence
Tears don't mean I'm breaking
They mean I'm finally free
[gang vocals]
I was made for this descent!
I was made for this!
I was made for this!

[whispered]
Made for this...
