They Named It After Me — A Song Inspired by Nipsey Hussle Square Dedication

March 1, 2026

📖 The Story

On February 28, 2026, Los Angeles renamed the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue to Nipsey Hussle Square. At the dedication, Lauren London spoke through tears about how Nipsey had predicted this would happen — that one day his name would be on that corner.

"When me and Nip first started dating, we would drive by over here and he would be like, 'You know, Boogie, one day, they're gonna name this whole section after me.' And here we are today," London told the crowd.

The location is where Hussle sold his first mixtapes and where he established his Marathon Clothing store in 2017. His brother Blacc Sam, Los Angeles Mayor Lauren Bass, and city council members attended the unveiling. "The true story isn't written in metal," Blacc Sam said. "It's written in what remains here."

This is a song about prophecy becoming reality. About words spoken into existence. About love that outlasts death and vision that transcends mortality. The street now remembers what he always knew: some voices are too loud to silence.

🎸 The Sound

Lauryn Hill-style conscious hip-hop soul

Melodic rap with neo-soul foundation, gospel-tinged emotional peaks, confessional delivery. Opens sparse — sampled drums, looped, intimate confession. Verse builds with staccato conversational flow. Pre-chorus swells with emotion. Chorus hits triumphant with singalong hook. Bridge strips to choir — diminuendo — then fortissimo slam back in for final chorus with gang vocals.

📝 Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Used to walk these corners, talking to myself
Saying one day they gon' carve my name in stone
Everybody laughed, said I was dreaming
But I was building blueprints for a throne

[Pre-Chorus]
She was there beside me in the struggle
Every word I whispered, she held tight
Now she standing at that intersection
Crying 'cause the words became the light

[Chorus]
They named it after me
What I spoke, became the street
Every word I planted in this ground
Finally found its concrete crown
They named it after me
The prophecy complete

[Verse 2]
See the sign where I used to serve the block
Where I turned my hunger into empire walls
Now my name hangs right above the stoplight
Every driver pauses where the vision calls

[Bridge]
They can take the body but they can't take the vision
What you build in love don't need permission
She looked up and whispered through the tears
"Baby, you were right all of these years"

[Final Chorus]
They named it after me
[gang vocals: Named it after me!]
What I spoke, became the street
[gang vocals: Became the street!]
Every word I planted in this ground
Finally found its concrete crown
They named it after me!
[gang vocals: Yeah! They named it after me!]
[all voices]
The prophecy complete!
