When We Were Golden

Feb 20, 2026

📖 The Story

The Story: "2026 is the new 2016" has become the defining social media phenomenon of early 2026—a massive nostalgia wave sweeping TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook with millions sharing throwbacks to the mid-2010s.

The trend began in late December 2025 and exploded in early January 2026. According to the BBC, searches for "2016" on TikTok increased sharply, with over 55 million videos now using 2016-style filters—those oversaturated colors and Snapchat puppy-dog filters that defined the era. Spotify playlists titled "2016" are seeing massive playback surges, filled with Drake, The Chainsmokers, Justin Bieber, and Zara Larsson.

But why 2016 specifically? It represents the last moment before everything changed—before the COVID-19 pandemic, before algorithmic feeds consumed everything, before AI-generated content became ubiquitous. For Generation Z, who were in middle school or high school then, it's the "before times." The year of Pokémon Go, bottle flips, the Mannequin Challenge. When Vine still existed. When social media felt fun instead of performative.

Celebrities have joined in: John Legend, Reese Witherspoon, Kylie Jenner posting "King Kylie era" throwbacks. In India, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan shared old photos. In the Philippines, actress Andi Eigenmann described 2016 as "golden" in her posts. The trend has gone truly global.

We already wrote "Back to Then" about this phenomenon, but the trend's persistence demanded a different angle. Where that song explored trying to break through the glass to reach your past self, "When We Were Golden" is more tender—a duet between who you are now and who you were then. It's about accepting you can't go back, but choosing to carry the glow forward.

📝 Lyrics

Found a folder on my phone
Colors brighter than they'd ever be
Before the world got heavy
Back when you still knew me

Bottle flips and filter glows
Dancing till the morning shows
We didn't know we were standing
In the last of the light rows

Take me back to when we were golden
When the only filter was the sun
Take me back to when we were golden
Before we knew what we'd become
Back when we were still young
When we were golden

The trends came fast but easy
Every challenge felt like play
Before the algorithms
Started stealing every day

Late nights that lasted forever
Hearts that swore they'd beat together
Didn't know the storm was coming
Didn't check the weather

Take me back to when we were golden
When the only filter was the sun
Take me back to when we were golden
Before we knew what we'd become
Back when we were still young
When we were golden

(Maybe we remember wrong)
Maybe we were just as lost
(But the glow was somehow brighter)
Worth whatever that it cost
(I scroll back through the photos)
Looking for the person that I was

Can't go back to when we were golden
But I carry it inside
Can't go back to when we were golden
Still I hold the flame alive
Keep the memory, survive
When we were golden

Golden... golden...
We were so golden...
